Lincoln Avenue
04:16
|
|||
another friday night is here
i’m not working, hell i don’t care
you see i got another place to be
with a bottle of something and a smile from a dream
we’re meeting up by that city square
south of wilson avenue, east of that western thoroughfare
at that public house
with a candle on the table and the smell of the stout
the fiddler plays his tune
now i don’t hear him, i’m in the other room
man, everything’s all right
with your arm around your girl and your holding her tight
(chorus)
brother, i don’t have time for you
i know where i’m going to
see my baby tonight
yeah when the day is through
she’s down on lincoln avenue
i think about her all day
it’s hard to get anything done
yeah it’s hard to play
when you’re all tied up in knots
you know everything’s fine
but your head’s on the rocks
does she feel the same way too?
with a loss of appetite and the when will i see you? soon?
god, she’s everything to me
gotta be with her, that’s how it’s gotta be
(chorus)
brother, i don’t have time for you
i know where i’m going to
see my baby tonight
yeah when my work is through
sister, i don’t have time for you
i know where i’m going to
see my baby tonight
yeah when the day is through
she’s down on lincoln avenue
now when she’s away
i don’t like it, i’d rather she stay
instead of being in that cold dark room
with the piano not playing
she’s only a few miles away
but it feels like she’s off the pacific highway
god, i want to hold her tight
all through the day, not just tonight
i’m going to see her now
and there’s nothing that can stop me somehow
i’m driving to her today and i’m taking western all the way
(chorus)

god only gives you so many drinks
a wise man said to me
he’s been staying up early, writing them stories
his sobriety not for free
the wife’s getting worried, he’s hiding his storage
with a banker’s lamp on and all of this courage
a tennis ball forming not on the left side
he thinks it’s something else, but he knows that he’s lied
god only gives you so many drinks
an old man said to me
as he gets home from work, he takes off his scrubs
from a hospital in cincinnati
he’s got the day off tomorrow and all of the rest
guess he can leave on his sunday best
as the dreams of yesteryear are fading today
the corner pocket takes your eight ball away
god only gives you so many drinks
somebody said to me
as he sits at the bar, he tells me ‘bout opera
he was singin’ in china, indonesia, and australia
he tells me it’s hard out there, you won’t make a dollar
as he lifts up his stout and takes another swallow
he bothers the barmaid, crossing that line
no one else was here, it was my turn this time
god only gives you so many drinks
as his brow moves up and his lips make a twitch
he’s got a dream that ain’t working as his good years roll by
would have happened by now, guess it was worth a try
the routine and the habits they trump the pursuit
with a monkey on your back and someone else’s suit
as the dreams of yesteryear are fading today
the corner pocket takes your eight ball away

Thrift Store Girl
02:56
|
|||
she was a thrift store girl
she never bought anything new
from her dresses to her skirts
from her hats to her shoes
take a drive on saturday
sometimes a weekday afternoon
to the black, white, and blue
you know the army just won’t do
what’s the color of the week?
is it yellow? is it red?
how ‘bout that coffee pot there?
oh it’s a purple, too bad
she’s found a nice blouse at only four at fifty percent
and a sun hat for two, this month she’ll be saving on rent
then to the paintings, the frames, the doo-dads and the junk
and there’s a clock, it’s vintage
it’s not working, it got stuck
but she’ll take it anyway
she likes the broken ones
at three bucks and a quarter
how can a girl go wrong?
she was a thrift store girl
she never bought anything new
except for her underwear
but the shoes were always used
they didn’t even have to fit
a size or two off was fine
it was all about the style, the price, and the design
she had good taste though
an eye for those brand names
a public hand-me-down
but it’s all one and the same
then to that record store on adams
man, they had everything
from the two dollar bargain bin
to the prices you’d never pay
and shoeboxes of earrings on the first floor in the back
they had the regular kind and she liked the ones that just clamp
a carousel of old postcards, she just couldn’t get her share
one dated november 1904, st. louis world’s fair
then to that used bookstore, preferred the hards to the paperbacks
with a curmudgeon behind the counter and a black cat on the racks
she liked women’s history and old fashion magazines
and there’s a marriage guide for women, tips from 1973
she’s found two for one at a price that can’t be beat
she’s saving up her pennies for an after thrifting treat
now heading back home, it’s been a victory day
she’ll be showing off her treasures on the next school day
to all her thrifting friends, she’ll be the talk of the town
until her next thrift adventure, it isn’t long from now
she was a thrift store girl, a thrift store girl

Get Close To Me
03:06
|
|||
c’mon and get close to me
c’mon and get close to me oh girl
c’mon and get close to me
c’mon and get close to me oh yeah
now i see you pretty baby sitting all alone
watcha lookin’ for tonight?
the great unknown
now is this seat taken? are you waiting for someone?
yeah i got the routine, i’m gonna come on down
looking real fine, got your hair done right
in that little black getup, hold my peace tonight
so talk to me baby, tell me sweet little lies
i’ll tell you another and this:
c’mon and get close to me
c’mon and get close to me oh girl
c’mon and get close to me
c’mon and get close to me oh yeah
Yeah now they’re playing that music, but i don’t dance
the way you’re looking at me, i just might take a chance
i take your hand girl, we leave our drinks at the bar
now get on that floor, yeah we’re havin’ a ball
what’s this now? someone’s trying to cut in
i give him the look, now get the picture tim!
here we are alone, it’s just me and you
i whisper in your ear just this:
c’mon and get close to me
c’mon and get close to me oh girl
c’mon and get close to me
c’mon and get close to me oh yeah
all right!
now you say it’s getting late, it might be time to go
but it’s cold out there, how ‘bout i drive you home?
leave a good tip and we walk into the night
next thing you know we’re driving through the lights
pull up outside your place, yeah it’s about half past three
you turn your head and now you’re smiling at me
you had a good time and you think i’m sweet
now just one more thing before you leave:
c’mon and get close to me
c’mon and get close to me oh girl
c’mon and get close to me
c’mon and get close to me oh yeah
c’mon and get close to me
c’mon and get close to me oh girl
c’mon and get close to me
c’mon and get close to me oh yeah
all right!

Happiness Is Home
04:20
|
|||
he’s living in a champagne world
with those downtown girls, in a late night amore
thinking he can still keep score
but it’s no more
for his happiness is home
running them daydreams all through the morn
with the afternoon’s freedoms, but they’re all his own
early in the eve, all together alone
before the bubbles foam
and his happiness is home
she’s living in a fellini scene
in a black and white picture, on a transparent screen
with his arms all around her and her lips no longer seen
that affair almost known
but it lives no longer
for her happiness is home
with two little ones, still to grow
and a husband who is still to show
at that late night apartment, where all her friends know
where that young man glows
but she’ll give him no throne
for her happiness is home
he’s remembering that excursion of that afternoon delight
that bittersweet diversion
so many years of the same romance
that average trance
wishing he had not flown
but no one knows
for his happiness is home
what would she think? what would she do?
the answers are never to be true
knowing now, he’ll never ‘gain roam
from the love in her eyes
for his happiness is home
he’s traveling and he’s blasting that music
those girls down in texas, those girls out in massachusetts
his wife in missouri, oh what she could know
but she’ll never leave him
for her happiness is home
now he’s out there, yeah he’s out there
and he might bend a vow or two or four
but he’ll keep on coming back
you see it never ends
with all the love that she’s shown
and his happiness is home
